When Innocence Dies

by Chris Basher

Two young deer together

roadside, traffic flashing by.

Its breeze keeps their fur alive.

Big black birds wait and watch

the eyes. No time to slow or stop.

Only through his rearview mirror does

he contemplate the death of innocence

until he nearly misses the expressway.

Fawn lying in the grass.
